The announcement said that their slated highlights for 2012 included ‘World War Z’ a zombie thriller directed by Marc Foster and starring brad Pitt, the next instalment in the franchise G.I Joe: Retaliation, again starring Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson alongside Channing Tatum; The Dictator, starring Sacha Baron Cohen and directed by his partner from Borat, Larry Charles, and the latest chapter in the franchise phenomenon known as Paranormal Activity. There is, as yet, no release date for the latter.
There are, in fact, no details at all about the latest Paranormal Activity being disclosed at present, and Paramount haven’t yet confirmed if Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost will return to the helm, and no word is forthcoming on the actors or the screenwriter either.

Paranormal Activity 3 was released on October 21 of last year. The horror movie grossed $54m on its opening weekend, making it the best ever opening for a horror flick. Despite only costing a paltry $5m to produce, it has since gone on to gross a mighty $202m worldwide, and it is little wonder Paramount want to keep the franchise going.

The film is currently being shot in Los Angeles and Amanda Seyfried is in the lead role. Demi Moore has recently made headlines in the celebrity world after splitting up with Ashton Kutcher. The Hollywood Reporter has recently claimed that Moore is to play Gloria Steinem, a renowned feminist, in the film.

Demi Moore, who is 49 years old, is joining the cast which also features James Franco who is playing the role of Hugh Hefner. Lindsay Lohan was originally cast to play Linda Lovelace but her continuing legal problems have meant that she has been expelled from the film.

Linda Lovelace was most famous for her role in the hard-core porn film Deep Throat which was released in 1972, this is widely regarded as the first pornographic film to have a plot. She later claimed, after the film was released, that she was forced into it by her husband of the time, Chuck Traynor, who she claimed held her at gunpoint and said he would shoot if she did not act in the film.

Ms Seyfried has commented about her role in the film, “it’s quite a terrifying role to fill as Linda Lovelace had a reputation for the extreme. I do get certain liberties in the production but there is not much room for changing things as the film is historically accurate.” Those who’ve seen the filming have said that Seyfried is almost unrecognisable in the role as she is wearing a brown wig.

The role of James Franco as Hugh Hefner has been reported by Variety magazine which said that it will be a cameo role for the scene when Lovelace visits the Playboy Mansion.

Despite the poor performance of the film it is expected that the sequel to the film will go ahead.

Before the film was released many people were hoping that it would be a good way for the cinema industry in the United States to end the year, but unfortunately it was financially unsuccessful. The film has failed to top box office records for the year although it has managed to pull in over $70 million from cinema tickets in the US and internationally.

The film stars Daniel Craig and despite its under performance Entertainment Weekly has recently been told by Sony that the sequel is going to go ahead. The article in Entertainment Weekly read, “The slower performance at the box office does not mean we are changing our minds about the development of the next film.”

In its opening week the film grossed around half of the expected amount. The critical reception of the film was also not as welcoming as was expected and many people felt that the weak reviews and poor box office performance would be enough for Sony to cancel the production of the next film.

The next script is being currently worked on by Stephen Zaillian and the two stars of the film have been signed on for the second production. It is unclear whether David Fincher wants to return as director but currently there is no one else signed onto the project.

Marvel are on a roll when it comes to films at the moment, but then, with being owned by Disney, they are probably under a lot of pressure to produce a high output of high grossing products.

Expectations are high for The Avengers next summer thanks to the success of Iron Man, Thor and Captain America, whilst the flagging X-Men series has been revitalised with the new, exciting prequel instalment, X-Men First Class.

New faces have taken on roles we once associated with other actors Michael Fassbender is the younger incarnation of Ian McKellan’s Magneto, whilst James McAvoy takes on Patrick Stewart’s Professor X. Edward Norton, though having starred in The Incredible Hulk, won’t be appearing in The Avengers as Mark Ruffalo takes on the role of the green giant instead.

We also have a new webslinger to reboot the wall crawling superhero that Tobey Maguire brought to life in 2002 The Social Network’s Andy Garfield has donned the skin tight red and blue suit, and will grace our screens in 2012 as the Amazing Spider-Man.

Talked up as a sort of gritty reboot of the franchise in the same vein as Christopher Nolan’s Batman films, this incarnation of Spidey will go back to basics, with uber-nerd Peter Parker back in high school. The red-headed Mary Jane is gone, replaced by Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacey. Having impressed all the right people with her performances in Zombieland and Easy A, Miss Stone is now back to her natural hair colour (blonde) to play Parker’s original comic book love interest.

Whether the time is right for a reboot or not, we will have to wait and see. However, no matter how good 2012′s new take on the franchise may be, there is no denying that both Spider-man and Spider-man 2 were both great films and shouldn’t be forgotten.

Both can be rented online from LOVEFiLM, the number one resource for streaming movies, where you can also find many of the original Spiderman animated TV series and video games for a variety of consoles. When it comes to Spider-man 3, however; Well, that may best be avoided.

Many people were excited to hear about the prospect of a Doctor Who movie being created. Early rumours suggested that the same director responsible for Harry Potter, David Yates, would be tackling the film however, it seems that the movie is nothing more than a rumour for the time being.

Yates has recently commented about a possible adaptation of the TV series into a movie, “this is not something we’re looking at doing immediately, it’s going to be a radical transformation to take it from the small screen to the big screen and we need time if we are going to do it right. We are currently looking at writers but it probably is not going to be hitting the big screen for another two or three years.”

This seems to suggest that there will be a Doctor Who movie eventually made however, but Stephen Moffat, who recently created the Tintin movie has said that Yates is incorrect and there will be no Doctor Who movie. He has recently said, “David Yates is a great director, but the comments he has made recently are simply not true, there is no Doctor Who movie currently in the works.”

Moffat even went on to comment that Doctor Who is such a huge international audience that not even Hollywood can begin to compete with it, which many would regard as quite a stretch.

He continued, “If we do create a Doctor Who movie it is going to need to feature the current Doctor Who on television and we are working closely with the BBC to make sure that the movie is something that the international audience will receive well, we want to create a movie that everyone likes.” Audiences might be asking for a Doctor Who movie but it seems as if the producers are willing to wait until it’s done right.

The service is working closely with movie studios to make sure that the films can be streamed online at the same day as the DVD release. This carries the great benefit that customers won’t have to wait to stream the movie and they can see it as soon as they have bought the DVD.

Another major disadvantage of the services that it is exclusive to Tesco and many people are wondering why movie studios haven’t capitalised on this idea in the first place. Whatever your opinion though, it is a unique service that provides added value to people buying DVDs. The major advantage is that the movie can be played by any media device connected to the Internet.

As if the thrill of hearing Bill Nighy as the voice of Grandsanta is not enough reason to want to head out to Arthur Christmas, those who book their tickets for today will get a special treat from Cineworld with entry into a contest to win a £4000 Sony Entertainment package.

The deal is being offer by Cineworld in collaboration with Sony to help promote the new 3D electronically equipment that allows a few lucky people to bring 3D home from the theatres and make it an everyday experience for anyone with the right tools.

For those who have not yet seen the adorable adverts for the 3D adventure Arthur Christmas, the basic plot of the film centres around the North Pole where millions of elves work together with Santa and his family to help deliver toys to tots all over the world. This year however there is one problem, despite all of the best choreography in the world, Santa has accidentally skipped a little girl and now something must be done to save her Christmas.

In a thrilling ride that follows James McAvoy’s voice as Arthur, the son of Santa, and Grandsanta, as they race to get the presents out to the missed girl in time, there are plenty of special effects to thrill both children and their parents.

The animation will likely look a bit familiar to those who enjoy the adventures of Wallace and Gromit as it comes from the same Oscar winning makers. Also featuring the voices of Hugh Laurie, Ashley Jensen, and Imelda Staunton, the all star voice team has already thrilled test audiences and is a guaranteed hit this Christmas for families of all ages and those who want a nice dose of holiday cheer to kick off their festive season.

Amongst the celebrities who turned out were Richard Wilson, Evan Bremner, Karen Dunbar, John Sessions and Kirsty Young, to watch Robbie Coltrane accept a special award for his outstanding contribution to film. Coltrane, of Cracker, Harry Potter and Tutti Frutti fame, dedicated the award to his children, joking that he appreciated them never asking him why he didn’t “get a proper job.”

Other awards were for grimmer and grittier contributions, with actor/director Peter Mullins receiving two of them for Neds, a film he wrote and directed, about a boy coming of age in 1970′s Scotland. The award for Best Feature and Best Actor went to the 2010 drama Donkeys. Mullins won Best Writer and Best Director; James Cosmo took Best Actor for his role as the man trying to reunite his estranged family, edging out his co-star Brian Pettifer who was nominated in the same category.

Jayd Johnson aced out nominees who were co-stars in Field of Blood to take the Best TV Actor/Actress award, while Limmy’s Show won out over Burnistoun and Rab C Nesbitt in the category of Best Entertainment Programme.

Movie fans voted online for their favourite Scottish film of the past two years, and the winner was Fast Romance, the 2011 romantic comedy with Juliet Cadzow and William Ruane.

Going back to 1964, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest author Ken Kesey teamed up with Neal Cassady, who was turned into a literary icon in the classic drifters novel On the Road by Jack Kerouac. Armed with a bagful of LSD, the two counter culture icons, decided to go on a trip to the New York World Fair with what later became known as a Merry Band of Pranksters and what turned out to be the archetypal road trip.

The group comprised a mishmash of anti-establishment, fun-loving, cool renegades – the kind who listened to jazz, talked about poets and had more than their fair share of amorous encounters. The half-bake idea was to film a documentary of the trip, but the footage put together on old 16mm cameras was never actually edited together.

Alex Gibney’s Magic Trip movie finally reopens the case of the Merry Band of Pranksters and reveals how the crew set off for the World Fair not long after the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which shocked America in that fateful moment, in Dallas, November 1963.

Strangely, as well as being a bizarre and comical bus ride across the states, the movie is also a videography of the culture of recreational drug use of the time. Gibney previously scooped an Oscar in 2005 for Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room and his political angles are normally acute rather than obtuse like obvious political commentators such as Michael Moore – not so grotesquely obvious.

In essence Gibney lets passengers on the bus tell the story and it touches on the great cultural transformation of the time with fascinating opinions civil rights and the feminist movement. The film isn’t simply a stiff documentary of 1960’s American counter-culture, it’s also a story of friendship and bonds and the birth of the road trip.

There may be something strange about sitting in dark room with a bunch of strangers while eating a selection of sweet or salty snacks. But that’s what millions of us do whenever we head to a London Cinema, or any cinema, anywhere in the country.

Whether it’s an IMAX or other cinema, London cinema-goers see cinema snacks as an integral part of watching a film. And it’s been that way for years, for trusty old staples like butter popcorn to relative newcomers like nachos with cheese, people may not actually need to eat while watching a movie but they choose to do it as part of the occasion.

However, health campaigners have noted that as actresses from Calista Flockhart and Jennifer Aniston to Courtney Cox Arquette and Lara Flynn Boyle get skinnier audiences waistlines are expanding. Some campaigners are putting this down to what we eat and how much we eat when we head out to the movies.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) is concerned about the portion sizes of cinema snacks which are often high in fat, sugar or salt. They cite the example of a large sweet popcorn from a central London cinema weighed 375g (13oz) and was likely to contain around 1,800 calories.

Add to that hotdogs, nachos, a family sized packet of M&Ms and all washed down with a small bucket of high sugar fizzy drink and you could see that they might have a point.

Indeed, many cinemas have started selling healthier options for those that like to crunch their way through the latest releases. And some of these options are pretty good too.

Switching from nachos to tortillas isn’t such a challenge, exchanging popcorn for mixed nuts may be perfectly acceptable, opting for frozen yogurt rather than ice cream is just as tasty and asking for diet rather than regular when ordering a drink is no big deal.

But then, even the health experts admit that overloading on calories at the movies is an occasional treat, rather than a core part of anyone’s diet. It’s the food people eat everyday that may cause health issues, not what they treat themselves to on the occasions they go to the cinema.

Renowned horror writer and director Stephen King even joined in on the debate, saying “that there are places for healthy options and they’re called health clubs.”

As with any food and health issue, it’s all about balance.
