Glee the movie

Ryan Murphy’s hit show Glee will be releasing a documentary movie featuring behind-the-scenes footage from the show. Following on from the recent Justin Beiber film, Never Say Never, this is a short film clearly targeted at fans of the show. Although the 3D lacks depth, much like the story, the movie is not a boring experience as it has many performances by the cast and is full of colour and glamour.

The movie features many of the songs from the first two seasons of the popular Fox show. Opening with the most famous cover by the TV show, that of Journey’s 80′s hit ‘Don’t Stop Believin’.’ The cast of the show, including Chris Colfer, Lea Michele and Cory Monteith give uplifting vocal performances. The movie is about embracing individuality much like the TV show. Gender, sexuality or race are irrelevant and all are accepted in the fictional Glee universe; this is why many believe the show is so popular.

Directed by Kevin Tancharoen he uses a great deal of footage from the live tour that recently took place. Also included are interviews with fans of the show, known as ‘Gleeks.’ These tell the moving stories of people who have in some way been moved by the show and had their lives affected by it. Particularly touching is the story of a girl with Aspergers syndrome who can identify with the shows characters.

Although some of the stars of the show are missing from this big screen production, there are many other components to keep the fans happy. Heather Morris performs a steamy rendition of ‘I’m A Slave 4 U’ by Britney and Gwyneth Paltrow even has a cameo. With her spectacular lungs it is Lea Michele who performs the best, with a spectacular performance of ‘Don’t Rain on My Parade,’ by Barbra Streisand.

Jason Statham’s Blitz review

Every now and then Jason Statham remembers he’s British and stars in a film where he doesn’t have explosives attached to his body or is having sex in front of race fans at a horse track, but not very often. He likes to make movies full of action that are also British like ‘The Bank Job’, the classy Roger Donaldson 2008 heist thriller and now ‘Blitz’ an okay but not remarkable drama about cops that premieres this week on Blu-Ray courtesy of Millennium and Lionsgate.

‘Hot Fuzz’, made in 2007 by Edgar Wright, was a British action comedy with cops as the central figure. This was in response to all the American trends with police stories where the protagonists are all violent, thugs themselves whose renegade behaviour never falls within the lines of proper police conduct.

The humour was produced by seeing just how ridiculous some of the clichés are in life and particularly in Britain, Bobbies do not even carry guns.. Elliot Lester Blitz’s direction seems to have something similar in mind bringing across the pond those -You are a damn loose Cannon – type of clichés, but does so with no hint of irony or humour.

He is quite successful with what he has directed as the film would work well on both sides of the Atlantic with only a minor change or two. Nevertheless the film does not get focused enough to be up to par with the most popular and best of the genre like Dirty Harry or Serpico.

Statham’s role is Tom Brant, a Detective Sergeant who is in hot water for beating with a hurling stick an innocent gang of Hooligans after they had attempted to steal a vehicle. But the brutality comes back at him when a killer that goes by the name of Blitz, short for Blitzkrieg, starts blowing away Brant’s fellow personnel.

Brant teams up with a homosexual officer portrayed by Paddy Considine, the acclaimed actor of In America and Hot Fuzz of all things, to find the killer and bring him to justice, his justice.

Eyes Wide Open JLS 3D movie

About to star in 3D on the big screen, JLS, the British boy band is not just any pop act. The members Marvin Humes, Aston Merrygold, Ortise Williams and JB Gill with a host of No 1 hits in their collection have now moved to the big screen with Eyes Wide Open that features film, never before seen, of some of the boy’s performances as well as backstage footage.

Within the pop world, it seems the latest fashion is 3D movies. JLS, runners up in the 2008 The X Factor have joined the big screen revolution with the likes of Justin Bieber the Canadian R&B singer and Michael Flatley the Irish American musician and dancer.

The premiere of Eyes Wide Open was last night at Soho Hotel in London and was filled to capacity with celebrities as Diana Vickers and One Direction, other past X Factor stars walked the red carpet to support JLS. On June 3 the movies will appear up in and down Ireland and the UK in 180 cinemas on its debut.

Lovefilm acquires MGM films

MGM, the major studio film distributor, may be a in a load of financial trouble at the moment, but they still made time to sign a contract with Lovefilm allowing their film archive to become part of the live streaming service.

Lovefilm has spent the last few months building its film collection for the online streaming rental service by making deals with Sony and Samsung so that consumers can stream their on-demand movie selection straight through home televisions.

The MGM deal proves that Lovefilm is working on building up its VoD library with 4,100 movies available currently for viewers to instantly demand and view.

This should help out MGM, which is in the middle of a financial jungle that has forced the major studio to place indefinite halts on The Hobbit and James Bond franchise films.

MGM also signed a new deal with ITV HD earlier in August that will allow ITV to show the entire James Bond franchise on their channel in HD.

For Lovefilm, this is one of their largest partnerships yet over its six year life. Its last great deal happened two years ago when it partnered up with Amazon so that it could win its DVD rental service within the UK borders.

CEO of Lovefilm, Simon Calver, stated that the company is delighted that MGM has agreed to make its content available to the rental service and stated that their library will be a great addition to what the company has to offer consumers.

Lindsay Lohan may escape three month rehab

Troubled actress Lindsay Lohan is due to find out today if she will be released early from rehab or be forced to spend the next two months in the court ordered program.

The court hearing in Beverly Hills supposedly has been ordered given reports from her treating doctors that they do not believe she actually has psychiatric or drug problems as previously diagnosed.

Lohan already has had the luck to get out of her solitary jail cell Paris Hilton style after only 13 days as part of an agreement to enter a 90 day rehab program in Los Angeles. She was serving the sentence for violating terms of her probation related to a cocaine possession and DUI charge in 2007.

Two weeks ago the prosecutor in her case stated that it is likely that she will recommended for early release with outpatient treatment after determining that she does not have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder despite the fact that she has been medicated for it over the last few years.

Other rumors state that she also does not suffer to bipolar disorder.

Rehab is familiar territory for Lohan as she has already been to rehab three times since 2007

Steven Spielberg says UK Film Council must be left alone

Steven Spielberg’s film studio today placed its backing behind the move to save the UK Film Council.

Spielberg’s, DreamWorks, has seen the production of a great number of Academy award winning films including Saving Private Ryan, War of the Worlds, and Gladiator. The studio wrote a letter to Chancellor George Osborne, in which Spielberg expressed concern about the decision to abolish the quango.

The letter was signed by the studio’s president of production, Steven Molen.

DreamWorks has shot a number of films within the UK including Sweeney Todd, which starred Helena Bonham Carter and Johnny Depp.

The letter comes at a time when the future of the council is uncertain. The quango is responsible for disturbing lottery cash and overseeing a £60m budget.

Stephen Frears, the well known director, accused the Government today of putting the British film industry in jeopardy by destroying the Council without announcing any plans for what will replace it.

Frears and director Danny Boyle along with many top producers claim that negotiations to get large ticket films into Britain are being hurt by the looming uncertainty.

Boyle known for directing Slumdog Millionaire stated that if you want to build a strong film industry there needs to be continuity so that people are aware of how to go about developing a film because without that they are too worried to proceed given the high cost of filming.

Frears added that a system has to be in place and should have been developed and announced before the Film Council was abolished.

British film funding concerns

The Department for Culture, Media & Sport announced Monday that as part of the government’s spending cutbacks the U.K. Film Council will be abolished, and many prominent figures in the film industry are raising some very pertinent questions about the decision.

The biggest concern seems to be whether funding for the industry will also be cut, and who will be making the decisions about how such funds will be distributed, assuming they are still available.

The UK Film Council was founded in 2000 with the stated purpose of developing and promoting the British film industry, and from all accounts it has done a pretty good job. More than £160 million in National Lottery money for over 900 films has been handed out by the UKFC over the past ten years.

Many if not most of these films are not mainstream, but more on the cutting edge of film making, and the aim, according to those on the council’s board of directors, has always been to encourage the artistry and creativity of British films in general and of new talent in the industry in particular.

British film directors and producers, as well as everyone else directly concerned with the movie industry in the country, are worried about the future of Britain’s large and lucrative film production, and whether this decision by Jeremy Hunt and the DCMS might cut the legs from under a valuable asset to both the culture and the economy. Word at present is that film funding will not be discontinued, but money will be distributed by other agencies as yet unnamed.

Sir 007 Sean visits his childhood home

Sir Sean Connery has paid a visit to Edinburgh, to the street on which he was born nearly 80 years ago in order to unveil a plaque honouring the regeneration of the area.

The site is located at 176 Fountainbridge, a block that was demolished back in the 1960’s. However, now the plaque marks the new housing and office development of Springside just a few yards from where the James Bond actor grew up.

Sir Sean stated that the area is now very different from the area he remembers when he was a child growing up. The plaque honours Sean Connery as an International film star and an Oscar winning actor and marks the place of his childhood home.

Sir Sean stated that when he was growing up his home was located in an industrial area, which left a mark both on his life, and Edinburgh in general, but now it is a pleasant area to visit, work, and live due to the amount of new homes, businesses, offices, and open spaces that have been built in place of tenements and factories.

However, he added that even throughout the transformation he is sure that the community spirit of the area is still strong.

While in the area, Sir Sean also met with the staff from CMI (Centre for the Moving Image) which works to bring the Edinburgh International Film Festival and Filmhouse together.

Director of the site’s developer, Dr. Ali Afshar, stated that it was an honour to see Sir Sean come back to his home as a child.

Lovefilm fights back against the World Cup

DVD rental company Lovefilm will launch the largest digital film promotion yet in their genre, by allowing both new and existing customers to watch a selected group of titles online for free during the upcoming World Cup month.

The promotion, titled ‘Extra Time’ will begin on June 11^th and run through the end of the Fifa World Cup giving those who are not great football fans a chance to find something else to watch.

The promotion will be backed by a large multi million advertising campaign and will include films from studios such as Dreamworks, Paramount, and Momentum. Those who want to watch the films can head over to www.lovefilm.com to download the Lovefilm Player.

Chief marketing officer of Lovefilm, Simon Morris, stated that this is the first digital promotion of its type in the UK, and that since the company is already a leader in digital films will allow it to highlight their collection of DVDs that can be streamed.

Lovefilm operates out of the UK where it already has over a million members and also streams to those who live in Germany, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark.

At the beginning of May Lovefilm and Samsung partnered up so that users can access the latest programmes and films through direct television streaming.

She’s Out of My League review trailer

The new romantic comedy She’s Out of My League is a film that actually surprises the viewer in a good way making it well worth the time and price of a box office ticket even though you may not recognize the leading roles instantly.

Actress Alice Eve wonderfully takes on the role of Molly who is a hot event planner and lawyer making her just a little feminine and a little self-assured business woman. As the plot goes, she is flying through Pittsburgh one day when she loses her mobile in the terminal and it is found by security personal member Kirk played by Jay Baruchel.

Baruchel typically plays the sidekick skinny nerdy counterpart of most comedies, but here he gets to take on one of the leading roles as he begins to date Molly after as Kirk after returning the mobile and scoring a few hockey tickets from her in the meantime.

Given the fact that the Molly is gorgeous and Kirk is well, a nerd, it’s a rough match to believe but keep in mind that Molly has just got out of a rough relationship and even if it looks odd it is the plotline.
From here, the plot lives off of the funny antics and mis-mesh of comical situations such as smart mouthed sidekicks, crazy best friends, and plenty of irritating family members.

However, what saves the film from being just another romantic slapstick comedy is the fact that the entire film is surrounded by a sweet spirit that cannot help but leave you connected with the characters.
