Johnny Depp shows his dark side in new gangster film

Johnny Depp plays the infamous Whitey Bulger, Boston’s flagrant gangster, in his next film, “Black Mass,” a crime thriller, reports Deadline. Depp will be working with his director of “Donnie Brasco”, Barry Levinson; also of the classics “Bugsy” and “Rain Man” fame. The title has been taken from Dick Lehr, with Gerald O’Neill’s ‘Black Mass’, a work with the verbose sub-title ‘The True Story of an Unholy Alliance Between the FBI and the Irish Mob’.

According to the website, it will be produced by Brian Oliver. In a release, Oliver said that he could not have been delighted more – casting the world’s biggest star along with Barry Levinson, Academy Award winning director – to bring to life the astonishing saga of the life and times of the protagonist on movie screen.

Oliver added that the film, ‘Black Mass,’ portrays vividly the trials and tribulations of the characters. It delivers the complexities of the incredible plot of corruption – the most horrific scandal in the history of the FBI; the darker side of Boston. Deftly, yet with great sensitivity, this film explores the issues of Irish heritage, family loyalty and South Boston.” The release date has not been announced, though the shooting has been scheduled for May
