Review of Liberal Arts

Josh Radnor is best known as the star of How I Met Your Mother, and his second stab at directing for the big screen can only be described as film for those who love books. Liberal Arts centres around Jesse Fisher (Radnor) a college admissions officer who, while travelling from New York back to his college in Ohio, meets and makes a connection with Zibby (Elizabeth Olsen) a 19 year old student.

Book lover Jesse becomes Zibby’s pen pal and their budding romance forces the 30 something Jesse to completely re-examine his life and face the fact that he can’t ignore his maturity. This is a film loaded with self examination and broody, so if self introspection isn’t really your then you should probably give it a miss.

Olsen, on the other hand, is absolutely charming as Zibby who is mature way beyond her years and brings Jesse gradually out of her shell as she encourages him to go with the flow and to say yes to whatever life may throw at him. There is an amusing scene where Jesse shows his loathing for the first book in the Twilight series and this more than anything highlights the generation gap between the pair.
