According to the Hollywood Reporter, British comedian/writer/actor Ricky Gervais is currently in talks about taking the leading role in the forthcoming sequel to the 2011 Muppet film. Although what role he is set to play is being kept under wraps, it said to be on par with the one that was played in last years film, The Muppets, by Jason Segel.
This new outing for Miss Piggy, Kermit, Fozzie Bear and the rest of the gang is to be set in Europe and if the rumours are true, it will be the first lead role that Gervais has taken in a film since his 2009 outing in The Invention of Lying. This won’t be his first run in with the Muppets however, as he filmed a cameo appearance for the last film, which unfortunately ended up on the floor of the cutting room.
This Muppets sequel will once more have James Bobin at the directorial helm, and Nicholas Stoller is returning as the screenwriter. Segel, who both starred and co-wrote the last film is expected to take a more behind the scenes role this time around and only make a cameo appearance. Ty Burrell, the star of the hit US show Modern Family plays a lazy inspector from Interpol, a role originally earmarked for Christopher Waltz.
The last muppets film made over £92m ($150) at the box office worldwide, and grew high acclaim from the critics. It was the first successful reunion for the late Jim Henson’s enduring creations on the big screen since The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland back in 1999. It was reported earlier in the year that the Muppets sequel is to be shot in and around the London area, and at Pinewood Studios, with filming taking place between late January and April 2013.
